Chewy Oatmeal Bars

Set oven at 325-350°F.

In a sauce pan bring to a boil:
1/2 c. water
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. cloves, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Remove from heat and add, but don’t stir:
1 c. old fashioned oatmeal
1 c. ground raisins

Cool to lukewarm and add:
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 egg, beaten
1 c. flour with 1/2 tsp. soda and 1/2 tsp salt

Spread in greased 10x16 inch cookie sheet. Bake approximately 15 minutes.

Have prepared a glaze of 1/2 c. powdered sugar, 2 Tbsp. melted butter or margarine, thinned to spread with orange juice or hot water. Spread over cake when done and return to oven for 2-3 minutes. Cut in bars when nearly cool. Don’t store until cold. Put waxed paper between layers.
